Why can’t we all just learn from YouTube tutorials?

Updated: Jan 2, 2024

Are you one of those people who like to learn guitar your own way? It's fun and it's comfortable to learn in front of a YouTube video, but for a lot of guitarists, this learning method ends up in frustration and loss of motivation.

A Guitar learning Revolution

The internet has revolutionized how we learn, and while it's a fantastic resource for technical insights, it falls short when it comes to nurturing the soulful side of music—something that children, especially, thrive on with in-person lessons and a guiding hand.

Sure, YouTube helps my non-reading students find their way around notes, scales, and chords, but real growth goes beyond these basics.

Struggling to Progress Beyond a Point?

If any of these challenges sound familiar to you, you might be someone who needs more explanation and who like to ask questions in real-time and get feedback about what you might be able to improve upon.

Here are the 5 most common questions I've been asked by my students - in particular the ones who have started learning to play guitar using YouTube tutorials, but struggled to progress beyond a certain level.

  1. Why does it sound so different when I play it?

  2. Why do I keep making mistakes when I speed up?

  3. I can't seem to improve anymore, why?

  4. My fingers won't do that, why?

Qualified Answers

The answers you need are the ones that take into account what you can already do and what you already know. This is why you need a qualified guitar teacher who can sit with you and analyse your playing ability and the way you practice.

Then the teacher develops the customized practice program that will equips you with the skills you need and the knowledge to understand the answers to these questions as they apply to your level of technical ability, musicianship and interpretation.
