Do you really need to learn to read music?

I think all children should learn to read music. Their brains are like sponges and the lifelong benefits of learning to read both standard notation and guitar tablature are significant and profound.

For everyone else it’s a choice though.

How far do you want to go? If you want to be able to play guitar sessions on records, then you are going to have to learn to read to some extent. If you want to learn to improvise or play songs around a summer campfire, you don’t need to learn to read music. Guitar Tab is fine for beginners and everyone who just plays for fun by themselves, jamming with friends or in a band. With videos that show us how to play , we don’t even need Tab. One thing that really helps is to be able to play guitar without looking at your fingers. The easiest way to make this happen is to sight read music while you play. Let me give you an example that is close to my heart. I was going to tell you about how I taught my daughter to play guitar when she was 6. But I'll go with this more recent story: Last year my fiancé asked me to teach her to play guitar. She is a very busy person. I told her the fastest way would be to learn to read music. She only had limited time to practise ( 10 minutes 3 times a week) and thought this wouldn’t be enough. Each lesson lasted 15 minutes - I gave her 3 per week. After the first 15 minutes she was reading music from a sheet. Within 3 weeks she was reading and playing with confidence and on her way to Grade 1 with ABRSM. It’s never too late to learn the right way, and it’s still the fastest way to make measurable progress.
